Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) on Wednesday slammed North Korea’s nuclear test, calling it an “outrageous act” and adding that it intends to inform North Korea’s ambassador in Singapore about its views.

In a press statement, the ministry said the test was a clear breach of UN resolutions, and an “outrageous act of defiance against the entire international community”.

The test, the third so far in the North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme, took place at an underground site in the country’s north-east. Pyongyang later said it was a response to what it called threats from the United States.

MFA’s statement added that the test did not enhance North Korea’s own security and threatens to destabilise the entire region, to the detriment of all, including North Korea itself. “We call upon the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) to desist from further provocative actions. It is our hope that the DPRK will change course and integrate itself into the region. Only then can the DPRK share in our region’s peace and prosperity,” said the statement.
