Sydney’s fledgling food truck scene will welcome a new arrival this week as Singapore Tourism Board drives its Singapore Shiok Truck into town.

From March 6 to 12, the truck will serve up Singaporean hawker-style dishes to hungry Sydneysiders who can show their appreciation by exclaiming Shiok! The term is “a Singlish term used to convey extreme pleasure and happiness, commonly associated with food,” the tourism body explained.

The truck’s aim is to encourage Sydney foodies to take a trip to the destination to immerse themselves in the local cuisine and forms part of STB’s Get Lost and Find the Real Singapore campaign.

STB area director Oceania, Sandra Leong, highlighted the “treasure trove” of local history, cuisine, culture and traditions that lies beneath Singapore’s contemporary exterior.

“The Singapore Shiok Truck will help bring this to life, offering Aussies a chance to whet their appetites with authentic hawker dishes that are close to Singaporeans’ hearts, and to learn more about Singapore’s unique local culture and stories through them,” she said.

The menu, designed by Masterchef finalist and Singaporean, Audra Morrice, includes katong laksa, sambal stingray, nonya chicken curry and popiah – all priced between $3 and $6 to reflect the affordability of Singapore’s foodie scene.

“One of the best ways to discover the real Singapore is through its food – it offers an insight into the history, traditions and people of Singapore,” Morrice said. “In some countries meals can often be an excuse for a conversation – in Singapore, food is the conversation.”

The Singapore Shiok Truck will visit locations such as Pitt Street Mall, Hyde Park and the Overseas Passenger Terminal during lunch and dinner hours over the seven-day period.
