Looking Up To And Down From Singapore"s Mammoth Marina Bay Sands

Shown at 8pm and 9.30pm (Friday and Saturday, an 11pm slot is added), the thirteen-minute extravaganza took 100 specialists three years to develop. The lower structure goes from deep blue to vibrant red and bright purple, while lasers beam through the night from the Sky Park. Water screens, fountains, and bursts of fire, accompanied by a soundtrack recorded by a 140-piece orchestra, its all there.

Walking through the ground floor lobby of the hotel, or having a drink in the lounge underneath Tower 3, we can best compare to being in a giant airport terminal, if airport terminals were 57 stories tall. Not surprisingly, there were masses of people around, including Vegas-style queues for check-in and check-out. Impressive, it is – intimate, it’s not. Looking up, you can see the different slopes each tower has, with artwork dangling high above you.

Rather than pay the S$20 ($16) for admission to the Observation Deck on floor 57, we decided to spend that money towards lunch at restaurant KU D TA, which serves modern Asian cuisine on the same floor. While the Observation Deck allows you to get closer to the edge of the building, we were happy to spend the money on food and take in the views from the restaurants terrace. On one side, you have the entire city in front of you, on the other, the newly-built Gardens by the Bay complex and the numerous ships waiting to get into Singapore harbor.

Naturally, a hotel/casino this size has more options for food and drinks than we could list here, and you could spend a good few hours getting around the giant mall and /or losing yourself in the casino. In addition, there is the interesting Art Science Museum on the waterfront.

A Deluxe room in Tower 3 at Marina Bay Sands starts at S$489 (U$396) on a Saturday late May.

Singapore will fill its tallest building with a luxury hotel, apartments and ...

Skidmore, Owings Merrill LLP, the 75-year-old American architecture, interior design and urban-planning firm better known as SOM, has revealed its design for Tanjong Pagar Centre, set to become Singapore’s tallest building upon its completion in 2016.

Reaching 951ft (290m), the 64-storey, mixed-use tower will house offices and high-end apartments, a luxury hotel, retail units and a sheltered event space in Tanjong Pagar City Park; in total the development will measure 1.7m sq ft. Located at the intersection between China Town and the Central Business District, the development is also intended to be a catalyst for further enhancements to the surrounding area. Major improvements are to be made to surrounding public spaces, including the complete redesign and refurbishment of Tanjong Pagar Park, and the creation of a 32,000sq ft “city room” which will act as a public meeting space.

Singapore’s rapidly changing skyline is currently dominated, in terms of height, by One Raffles Place, Republic Plaza and United Overseas Bank Plaza One, which are 919ft (280m) tall; the tallest residential building is the 803ft (245m) Marina Bay Tower. SOM can already claim authority in developing superlative buildings as it is the firm behind the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Measuring 2,717ft (828m), the 163-storey skyscraper is the tallest building in the world. 43ea0 px The Members Of U KISS Discuss Their Return To Singapore And Recently ...

Chanel - Pre Spring/Summer 2014

Chanel – Pre Spring/Summer 2014

KARL

LAGERFELD
‘s latest Chanel spectacular

took place in Singapore last night and, by Karl’s standards, was a

decidedly pared-back affair. The pre-spring/summer 2014 collection

was unveiled inside a disused former nutmeg plantation – all

concrete floors, whitewashed walls and electric lighting – to give

the air of “tropics before air-conditioning”.

“I like the idea that it’s not impeccable.

There’s a romantic charm that new things cannot always have,” said

Lagerfeld. “It’s not [just] about the historical details, but also

the mood.”

Guests such as Dakota Fanning, Anna Mouglalis

and Carine Roitfeld watched as models including Cara Delevingne,

Lindsey Wixson and Joan Smalls paraded a collection heavily

influenced by its Southeast Asian setting, but with nods to the

fashion house’s heritage – specifically, Gabrielle Chanel’s first

store in Deauville in 1913 – with a touch of British sportsmanship

thrown in for good measure. The opening of co-ordinating

two-pieces, dresses over wide-leg trousers and cricket wear -

complete with bats, V-neck jumpers and shin guards – made way for

little lace playsuits, pleated silk dresses and dual-length skirts.

Eveningwear came complete with shimmer, sequins, exaggerated

appliqué and lashings of pearls – layered around the neck, wrapped

around the waist and cuffing wrists – all in Lagerfeld’s signature

monochrome colour palette.

“It’s a bit of Chanel’s history and a bit of

influence from this part of the world,” Lagerfeld told
WWD. “You don’t get into the details, you reinvent the

details.”
